Keynote Speakers

Sarah Greene, MPH

Sarah Greene is a consultant, researcher, and cancer survivor with expertise in learning health systems, health communication, electronic health data, and patient-centered care. Much of her career has been focused on building productive, sustainable multi-site networks that conducted applied research on cancer, aging, and communication. She applies a versatile skillset and intellectual curiosity in the areas of digital health, evidence mobilization, and community engagement, and is a recognized national leader in understanding how to bridge research and healthcare delivery using a learning health systems approach. Throughout her career, she has frequently led strategic planning and change management initiatives and complements these skills with strong technical capabilities including literature synthesis, survey design, evaluation, and qualitative analysis. Ms. Greene’s perspectives are deeply informed by her recent experience with a cancer diagnosis and successful treatment.

Recent consulting clients include the National Academy of Medicine, Trillium Health Partners, the National Cancer Institute, and Kaiser Permanente. Prior to becoming a consultant, she was the inaugural Executive Director of the Health Care Systems Research Network, a consortium of embedded research centers, where she led all of the organization’s activities. Ms. Greene also served as an Associate Director at PCORI, providing intellectual and organizational leadership for PCORI’s National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network, PCORnet®. Additional appointments include Board positions for Medstar Health Research Institute and the Washington Health Alliance, and Associate Editor for the Learning Health Systems journal.

An accomplished writer and speaker with more than 170 publications and presentations, she has shared her work with the National Academy of Medicine, SSA Quebec, American College of Cardiology, American Medical Informatics Association, and AcademyHealth, among many other organizations. Ms. Greene received both her MPH and a BA in Psychology and Italian from Indiana University and resides in Seattle.

Robert Reid, MD, PhD

Dr. Robert Reid is the Hazel McCallion Research Chair in Learning Health Systems and Chief Scientist at the Institute for Better Health (IBH) and Senior Vice President, Science at Trillium Health Partners (THP.) He is a global expert and thought leader in population health, learning health systems and primary care. He is best known for his work in developing and evaluating a patient-centred medical home at Group Health Cooperative, now Kaiser Permanente. Dr. Reid is currently providing expertise in the re-design of Ontario’s health care system through the Ontario Health Teams initiative. With IBH, Dr. Reid focuses on generating new ways to engage, design, deliver and finance health care and creating partnerships with patients, caregivers and the community to improve population health. At the University of Toronto, Dr. Reid holds an academic appointment as Professor (status) with the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME), and the Department of Family and Community Medicine. He is also a Professor with McMaster University’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact; and an Affiliate Associate Professor with the University of Washington’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Dr. Reid received his medical degree from the University of Alberta and completed a Master’s Degree in Epidemiology and a Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins University.

Ibukun Abejirinde, MD, PhD

Ibukun Abejirinde is a Scientist at the Institute for Better Health, Trillium Health Partners, where she conducts applied health research within the framework of a learning health system, with a particular focus on digitally-enabled models of care and their implications for health equity and health system strengthening. She works closely with policymakers, patients, community organizations, and researchers to inform improvements in access to quality care for marginalized groups- immigrants and refugees, racialized populations and older adults. Dr. Abejirinde is an Assistant Professor (Status) at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and a 2022 AMS Fellow in Compassion and Artificial Intelligence.

Brianne Wood, PhD

Brianne Wood is an Associate Scientist of Social Accountability and Learning Health Systems jointly with Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute and NOSM University. With a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa, Brianne worked as a public health and health systems epidemiologist in Northern Ontario since 2015, before transitioning to academia in 2019. Currently, Brianne is a Northern Ontario Rapid Improvement Supports and Exchange (RISE) lead, working with Northern Ontario Health Teams to strengthen Northern-specific data analytics, evaluation, and research capacity. Brianne is the Research Director of a primary health care practice-based research and learning network (NORTHH) in Northern Ontario. She is the 2021 recipient of the Health Research Foundation of Innovative Medicines Canada Fellowship in Health Systems Resilience. Her research interests include evaluating impacts of learning health systems, primary health care capacity, and health equity in northern, rural, and remote regions.
